Grotesque (Gurotesuku) (2009) review.

Director: Koji Shiraishi

Studio: Ace Deuce Entertainment

Starring: Hiroaki Kawatsure, Tsugumi Nagasawa, Shigeo Osako

The story starts with a young couple Aki and Kazuo (Tsugumi Nagasawa and Hiroaki Kawatsure ) walking together in the middle of a quiet area, where they are suddenly attacked by an anonymous madman (Shigeo Osako) and captured by him. As the two of them wake up from their assault, the couple find themselves tied up in the basement of this mysterious doctor where he goes on to explain his perverted and demented ideas towards both of them.

Aki and Kazuo are trapped with nowhere to go and obviously left with no other choice but to face the sadistic torture that is waiting for both of them. The couple have to suffer various types of torture and cruelty throughout, where the doctor wants Kazuo to convince Aki that he would really die for her and is forced to go through excruciating pain to prove his love. The main purpose of this torture is to leave the doctor feeling aroused by watching the couple having to stand unbearable suffering.

So as the anonymous doctor inflicts unexplainable acts of torture on the young couple like finger slicing and hammering nails into sensitive body parts, he commits these actions with delight and will stop at nothing to do what he wants. If the doctor feels turned on after committing these vicious acts, then the couple might be free to leave if either of them survives but if one of them dies it makes no difference. The priority for him is to get what he wants out of the whole act.

There is a lot of suspense during the movie, as there are moments that will leave you wondering who is going to die first and will either of them make it alive? The gore sequences tend to be very realistic at certain scenes due to some of the sound effects and they can be stomach turning at times. If you are a true gore fan and love extreme Japanese cinema then you will certainly enjoy this bloodbath. Although if you despise the slightest bit of gore and you are not into torture films, then do not go anywhere near it and do not even consider watching the movie.

The performances off the actors in this film are not really that well done but if you intend on watching this film, then it should be to satisfy your curiosity surrounding its controversy (as it was banned in the UK) or to see how far Japanese cinema is able to go when it comes to making nauseating gore effects.
