Human/Zombie Relationships Awaken More Than the Undead

Cinema’s favorite monsters and supernatural creatures have been forming romantic bonds with humans for decades. King Kong fell in love with Ann Darrow. Casper fell in love with Wendy. Anime is lousy with non-human/human relationships. And, of course, there’s the vampire/human and werwolf/human romance stories of Twilight.

While many of these characters make for a somewhat plausible storyline because the non-humans still have human characteristics, the most shocking thing about the recent group of supernatural heartthrobs is that they don’t have a pulse at all. I am, of course, referring to zombies.

With film and TV successes such as The Walking Dead, Zombieland, and World War Z, zombies have been the rest of the world’s answer to the vampire and werewolf craze that Twilight brought. These, of course, didn’t include human-on-the-undead love affairs, just a bunch of people trying to get away from the infected population.

Things have started to change, though, as apparently people are growing more and more interested in what happens when a human falls in love… with a zombie. The Guardian even called the zombie love trend, „the new thing in romantic fiction,“ citing new works such as Lori Perkins‘ Hungry for Your Love: An Anthology of Zombie Romance.

Books aren’t the only works pushing the romance story lines between the living and the undead. TV and cinema have also taken advantage of the zombie craze. Hell, the whole plot of 2013’s Warm Bodies was centered on a human and zombie love story.

One character in particular that’s leading the new wave of fictional zombiephiles is a middle-schooler from FOX’s animated show Bob’s Burgers. Just kicking off their fourth season, the show recently received accolades for the character Tina, an awkward 13-year-old girl facing all the normal troubles of adolescents. However, it was her personality and interests that landed her the title of „The Best Character on TV“ according to USA Today.

Along with boys and horses, Tina is obsessed with zombies. And she doesn’t just love them in the sense that she loves a good zombie horror flick. Tina is actually attracted to them, and regularly fantasizes about making out with them.

But zombiephile fantasies like Tina’s don’t transfer over into the desires of real life individuals… right?

You may be surprised.

There are people whose attraction to zombies has gone beyond fandom and entered their sexual desires.

Now, it’s not my personal cup of tea, but I’m not judging, either. It’s obvious those who feel the attraction aren’t alone. There are, yes, pornographic films dedicated to satisfying the more carnal desires of zombiephiles out there—and by carnal, that’s not a reference to eating brains. One of the more prominent movies in this sub-genre is the Adam and Eve-produced D2: Deviance, which ditches any potential male zombies for all-female zombie love fest. It may not be something that zombie film legend George Romero had in mind when he started the craze back with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead, but we don’t know that for sure.

So how does a fetish such as this come about? There’s no black and white answer for each individual, but there are some hypotheses.

The Zed World says the connection between death and sex is based on the fact that they share the sensation of an „uncontrollable release.“ In other words, you cannot fight back from the brink of orgasm or the brink of death. The fear of death can bring about the same kind of motivation that some feel when the opportunity arises for sex. Sex with zombies can also be a manifestation of the fear of the unknown, an emotionally charged moment that connects a person to a representation of their own mortality.

He also mentions something called the „uncontrollable release,“ which is says is similar to what zombies experience when eating brains. It’s a craving; an unmanageable desire. The savage way that they attack brains with such enthusiasm is similar to the level of intensity people want to experience during sex. Essentially, they want their partner to want them as much as a zombie craves brains.

Personally, I’d rather watch a zombie flick and enjoy the scare factor of it all, but to each his or her own. I have to admit however, this Halloween I’ll definitely be more curious about just how much the couples dressed as zombies enjoy wearing their costumes…
